Anxiety amidst a Pandemic
Anxiety is at an all time high right now for many people. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought much change and uncertainty to our "normal" daily routine. People who have dealt with and experienced anxiety in the past are seeing a surge in their symptoms. Many people who have not had pervasive anxiety symptoms before are experiencing frequent anxious thoughts, tight chests, restlessness and difficulty relaxing. Nothing feels normal right now and we can feel a bit (or a great deal) out of sorts. Uncertainty and unfamiliarity are often accompanied by anxiety, panic and stress. Since we're not in our normal routine, it can be even more difficult to soothe the symptoms of anxiety. Creating a new routine is one great way to reduce and regulate anxiety. Have a set time to get up and go to bed each day; stick to that schedule even on the weekends and you'll find that it will greatly help your quality of sleep. Limit the amount of news or information you are reading and watching about the Coronavirus. Incorporate exercise or movement into your day; go for a walk before or after your work hours or do an online exercise workout. If you are working from home, create a ritual that starts and ends your work day; it helps to reduce stress and anxiety if there are clear starts and stops to things in our days. Some people are trying out virtual commutes and walking around the block before starting work and then walking around the block at the end of their work day. Things like this are great for creating some boundaries around work and home life and routines can also help us feel more calm in times of uncertainty. Reaching out for some brief therapy during this hard time can be a great way to care for yourself and find some new coping strategies for this unprecedented time. Counseling is a safe, confidential and supportive environment where you can explore anxious thoughts and feelings and discover new ways to think and act which can greatly reduce anxiety. Right now most counselors are offering Telehealth (also called Distance Counseling. Telemental Health, Telebehavioral Health or Virtual Counseling). Telehealth can sound scary or strange. Distance Counseling is a great way to start therapy because you can choose the environment that feels safe, confidential and comfortable for you!
